Introduction
If you’re thinking about enrolling in an online graduate program, you probably have some questions about the advantages to learning online, things to look for in a program, and what types of programs are out there.
Don’t worry — we’re here to help. This toolkit will help you make a confident decision when it comes to your online grad school journey. First, let’s take a look at the pros of enrolling in an online program.
The Pros of Online Learning
While online learning can be a great option for some, it may not be the best fit for others. So, it’s good to have a clear picture of the pros — and cons — as you decide whether an online or on-campus degree program is the way for you to go.
First up, let’s take a look at reasons why an online graduate degree program is a great choice for most people.
You Enjoy a Flexible Learning Environment
One big draw to pursuing a degree online is the flexibility: you’re able to complete your coursework around your schedule. This makes it easier to study while you’re working, taking care of family members, or ensuring that other commitments are met.
Online learning also offers flexibility when it comes to accommodating various learning styles. So whether you learn quickly or you need extra time to review materials, you can pace your progress in a way that suits your needs.
Online Degrees Can Be More Affordable
Another advantage is you can earn a quality degree for a lower price. One reason is that online programs often have lower overhead costs (e.g., the university doesn’t have to pay for things like electricity for buildings, because you’re not on campus) than in-person options.
Also, you might not have to pay certain fees that would be associated with the on-campus program, because you’re not using services that would be needed by those students. Finally, you can save money because you’re not relocating to a new place, paying to commute or for new housing/dining costs, etc.
Choose From Graduate Degree Programs Anywhere
When you’re limited to attending a university that’s nearby, this also limits the types of degree programs you have access to. But online learning allows you to enroll in programs from institutions that might be thousands of miles away from where you live.
For example, say you want to earn a Ph.D. in Occupational Safety and Health. While University X in your town doesn’t offer that program, University Y (a few states over), does offer the program online. Plus, University Y has an international reputation for offering one of the best Ph.D. programs in this area, because it’s able to offer a number of specialized courses and learning opportunities that other universities can’t.
Why wouldn’t you jump at the chance to enroll in the program at University Y?
There Are Plenty of Ways to Interact With Faculty Members
Online Programs Can Support Your Career Development

There Are Plenty of Ways to Interact With Faculty Members
Although you aren’t face to face with faculty when you’re enrolled in an online program, there are several ways for you to stay in touch with your faculty members. Here are some examples:
- Live Lectures and Webinars. Online courses often offer these opportunities for you to interact with your instructors in real time. You have a chance to ask questions, participate in discussions, and receive immediate feedback.
- Online Discussion Boards. You’ll typically have access to discussion boards or e-forums where you can ask questions and collaborate with fellow students. Instructors also use these boards as a place to answer questions and provide information about coursework.
- Email and Messaging. Of course, you’ll also have access to email/messaging platforms that allow you to interact with faculty members (just as you would in an on-campus program).
- Office Hours. Just because you aren’t physically on campus, doesn’t mean you won’t have access to office hours. Faculty members will often offer virtual office hours through Zoom or Teams where you can ask questions and get one-on-one feedback.

Online Programs Can Support Your Career Development
Completing your degree online also provides access to opportunities that can benefit working students. For example, many program options are actually designed with a career focus in mind. So, you learn practical skills that are directly applicable to your job requirements. Here are some additional ways your professional life can benefit:
- Networking Opportunities. Through your learning platform, you’ll likely have access to a virtual community where you can connect with peers, faculty members, and even industry professionals. These networking opportunities can be a great way to build professional relationships and explore career opportunities.
- Credentials and Certifications. Online learning can also provide an opportunity to earn credentials and certifications that are recognized by your employer. These credentials demonstrate your commitment to ongoing learning and skill development.
- Career Support Services. Some online programs provide career support services, such as resume writing assistance, job search resources, and interview prep. These can be invaluable support if you’re pursuing a degree in a new field and will be on the hunt for a job.
A Few Things to Consider When It Comes to Online Learning
- You’re easily distracted. When you’re studying online and at your own pace, it can be easy to get distracted by the kids, work, and other things going on around you. To thrive in an online program, you need to be able to stay motivated and stick to a schedule of some sort.
- You’re looking for a lot of hands-on experience. There are certain programs — especially those in fields where you might need to conduct research and/or lab work — where being able to gain hands-on experience is important to your learning process. If you’re pursuing one of these options, an online program might not equip you with the skills you need to develop to be successful.
- You struggle with technology. To succeed in an online program, you need a reliable internet connection and a computer that you work well with. You also need to understand how to use your online learning platform and other online resources you’ll use as a student ranging from email to video conferencing platforms like Zoom.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), those who earn a Master’s in Economics typically receive a median salary of more than $115,000 each year.
Then, there are students who pursue a Master of Science in Nursing. According to the BLS, jobs as nurse anesthetists, nurse midwives, and nurse practitioners are expected to grow by 38% from 2022 to 2032. And people working in these roles typically earn a median annual salary of more than $129,000.
The bottom line is that with a master’s degree, you’ll earn more each week than if you stopped at a bachelor’s degree — $1,737 vs. $1,493. And with a doctoral degree, you stand to earn an even higher median weekly salary of $2,109!
